Some Advice on Choosing a Swimming School in Brooklyn

In terms of swimming, Brooklyn might not have the high-class reputation of Manhattan, but still it offers excellent instruction and sports facilities. Many of Brooklyn’s diverse neighborhoods have year-round swimming classes. New York city, its sport centers and private swimming schools all provide aquatic instruction and indoor swimming in the city’s most populous borough. Landlubber adults can overcome their fear of water, while toddlers and children can get a head start on learn-to-swim programs.
In New York, everyone can choose an affordable option for swimming at own choice: the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation offers free lessons in swimming throughout the whole year at city pools along with some social organizations that provide aquatics and swimming lessons for children, teens and adults. But those who value the personal approach of a qualified swimming instructor and quality above price, choose a private swimming school. Brooklyn offers many schools of swimming, so how to choose the one that would cater best for you? Let us give you some advice and guidelines.
Swimming is a valuable skill that can be a lifesaver. If you are looking for a swimming school for your child or for yourself, here are some things to be kept in mind:
What should be included in lessons:
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, all aquatics programs for children under 4 years old should include:
• Strategies for prevention of drowning.
• Information regarding the motor and cognitive limitations of toddlers and infants.
• The adults’ role in monitoring and supervising children in water.
• Explanation of the risks of water.
Swimming lessons
Adults and older children are grouped based on their age, individual ability and development level. Working in small groups with certified instructors, beginners learn basic swimming techniques such as breathing, general water safety, leg and arm arm movements, and later on — various strokes, as they get more confident and experienced in a pool.
Choosing a swimming class
For those willing to learn to swim, Brooklyn has much to offer. But how to find a right class for you? Ask a doctor, former students or other parents for advice. Speak with the instructor and program supervisor beforehand, and observe the class before signing up.
Other points to be kept in mind are:
• Schedule: Don’t the swim classes take place after another activity? Won’t you be tired by the time you get to class? Find a class that fits into your schedule.
• Class placement: What skills is placement based on? Will your child and/or you be with other swimmers of the same age and skill set?
• Instructors’ credentials: How are the instructors trained and what certificates do they hold? Do they know cardiopulmonary resuscitation? There should also be a certified lifeguard on duty at all times.
• Size: How many people are in one swimming group? For kids, the rule of a thumb is 1 instructor for every 6 preschoolers or 8-grade students. Only keeping to this staff-student ratio allows for each student to get individual attention and instruction.
Choosing a swimming school should be taken seriously: no matter how much research you do, be sure that you will eventually learn new skills you can practice. Parents’ Role in Making a Baby Learn to Swim

A core of successful cultivation of swimming skills at an early age is parents’ involvement in swimming lessons. Most swimming instructors agree that for the best results kids under the age of four must be accompanied by adults when they learn to swim. New York city abounds in various swimming pools, so there is no problem in finding the one which you can attend together with your child.
Parental involvement in swimming lessons is beneficial for many reasons. They include: fine motor development, child and parent relationship, safe and secure learning environment, parental education and maximum time for practice.
Fine Motor Development
From numerous academic studies and our instructors’ education background, we know that until the age of 4, children don’t possess the fine motor skills necessary to coordinate “conventional swimming”. For better results kids need one-on-one instruction and manipulation. Such instructions and manipulations are best provided by parents. Generally, the children who have their parents involved in the swimming lessons will coordinate better become skillful swimmers long before those do not have such opportunity.
Safe and Secure Learning Environment
One of the greatest causes of accidental deaths among preschool children is drowning. Most of these deaths occur in backyard swimming pools to the children who just begin to learn to swim (NY is not an exception in this sad statistics).
Hence it is of particular importance that parents are involved in learning their children to swim, since this way kids learn a cautious approach to the water and get awareness that it is prohibited to swim unless being accompanied by a parent. Adhering to this principle decreases the likelihood for kids getting into hazardous situations.
It should be kept in mind that it is impossible for one adult to adequately supervise numerous children under the age of 4. Hence the early swim lessons which don’t keep one-on-one ratio are potentially dangerous.
Child and Parent Relationship
Swimming is a perfect way for children and parents both to learn to swim and have fun together. For many children it becomes a treat, as they are allocated one-on-one time to play with their parents. Here a magical bond can be established between children and parents as they learn together in the children swimming lessons.
Parental Education
We believe that parents should get profound education on the early learn to swim process. It allows them to become experts in kids swimming. We believe that by giving this knowledge to parents, much better results can eventually be achieved, as parents may practice the skills outside the formal environment of baby swimming lessons.
Maximum Time for Practice
Kids need continual repetition and practice for rapid swimming skills acquisition and general improvement. Getting parents involved, a child receives one-on-one attention and may practice the swimming skills over and over without the need to wait for the attention of one swimming teacher.
Water Sports for Children

For children, water sports have always been adventurous and filled with fun. As a rule of a thumb, the earlier a child gets accustomed to water — the easier he/she will eventually swim. But in any case, safety should be of utmost priority. All children must compulsorily wear safety gear, even if they claim to know how to swim. All rafts and boats should also have extra lifebuoys, whistles and life jackets. All water sports activities should be supervised by an adult who knows how to swim (preferably by a qualified lifeguard). He should also know what to do in case of emergency and the ABCs of giving first aid. It is advisable to carry out water sports when the weather is favourable. If the weather is too sunny though, do apply sunscreen cream to protect your skin from radiation.
There are various water sports NY children can choose from: some are just for pleasure, while some other are very exciting and challenging. Let’s start with a simple yet very much enjoyable water sport like boating. Most summer camps offer sports programs which include canoeing and boating. Don’t forget to take on your life jackets while you get into a boat, and always follow the instructor’s or guide’s instructions. Sailing is especially adventurous if you catch a good wind. Once you have practiced enough and develop good skills, you may even want to take part in your local sailing regattas! So, if you are in for an adventurous water sport — then sailing has to be your first choice!
Those kids who love nature will choose scuba diving, where they will be able to develop empathy towards animals and to learn more about the fascinating world of underwater inhabitants. If you want to admire the color of blue, explore the corals and swim with fishes — then scuba diving is your best choice. Being an excellent exercise by itself, scuba diving can substitute hours of tedious workout in a gym.
Another excellent kind of water sports children will definitely love is surfing, and it is a superb activity for the whole family during summers.
But the basic and underlying activity for all water sports is swimming. Swimming is one of the most favorite sports for many children as well as for adults; it doesn’t matter if you swim in an ocean, a river, a lake or a pool, either alone, or with friends or any competitive swimmers — swimming is always recreational and enjoyable. But certain precaution should be taken as well. Try to avoid swimming after heavy food. Always make sure the water is clean. If you are a learner or a beginner — stay away from the depth. Wear ear plugs, a swim cap and goggles while swimming.
It’s much easier to meet all these rules and requirements if you’re starting to learn to swim in a pool, rather than in open water. Contrary to other water sports New York can offer, swimming in a pool is generally more affordable, allows for flexible schedule and is appropriate for all ages. Besides, apart from learning to swim and performing recreational activities, you can even play water volleyball and basketball in a pool — which is even more fun and exciting!
So, if you’ve made up your mind to go into these joyous and healthy activities — Dolphin Swimming School invites you into the world of water sports (Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island residents will find our location most convenient).
5 Tips To Help Keep You Motivated

1. Ignore the Clock
The best way to fight flab is plain slow swimming.
To lose extra kilograms you do not need to work as hard in the water as you might think. Gentle aerobic exercise is what you need for burning fat. Enjoy the experience of movement in water, of encountering its resistance. See it as a meditation.
2. Put Technique before Fitness
If you’re training for a triathlon, remember that your greatest need in the long run is probably to work on technique. Most aspiring triathletes sacrifice technique for fitness but you can be pleased to get out of the water feeling energized and ready for the bike ride. Swimming purely for fitness soon gets boring. Working on technique offers limitless mental stimulation.
3. Use Interval Training
Even without looking at the clock, there is something about interval training that keeps you motivated and ensures you complete your target distances. If your plan is simply to swim 20 or 40 lengths, there’s a danger of boredom setting in before you’re out of the changing rooms! But if you decide you’re going to do 5 x 100 metres with a little rest in between (5 repetitions of 4 lengths in a standard pool), your sessions are bound to be more enjoyable. Because you’re only doing 4 lengths at a time, you’ll inevitably work a little bit harder than your plodding pace. Enjoy a short rest and go again. Sometimes it’s fun to use the clock and see if you can keep the same pace but don’t get obsessed with times!
4. Swim Less Far
For a healthy amount of aerobic fitness, how much distance do you really need to cover? How little can you get away with? Instead of aiming too high and disappointing yourself, aim low and be satisfied! If you do 500 metres twice a week you may only need to be in the pool 20 minutes but you can come out feeling great and looking forward to your next swim. If you’re thinking about doing your first triathlon, remember that most events for beginners only involve a 400 or 500 metre pool swim.
5. Play
Try to do some lengths of something that doesn’t feel like real swimming. We learn through play. The strokes depend on our ability to rotate. So practise rolling from front to back all the way to the other end of the pool. Enjoy the freedom you have in the water to experiment with movement. When you go back to your stroke, something may have changed.

Even professional athletes of non-water sports resort to swimming for rehabilitation purposes when suffering injury.
